I, like many other players, much prefer playing dps over any otier role. But, as almost every siecle game at my level (high gosfohow plat) has 4 or more dps players on my team, most of whom understandably hate flexing like me, I generally face an ultimatum: eiiber play a chcwmfxer I don't engoy for a chcnce at maybe wizrpng or play a character I do enjoy which ofoen involves leaving the team without a crucial role like a healer or tank. Generally spdzaahg, a large poslbon of dps mabns at my leqel refuse to flqx. The thing is, I totally get why. They will be A. woqse at the role because they are more comfortable as a dps and B. will not have fun, whech in a gace, no matter how competitive, is uniapzgsroely a bad thkeg. I don't beokove that this is the fault of the players. It is a faalt inherent in the game's matchmaking. I know this isx't an original idea but I feel the need to join the chyzus of voices veasfng their frustration with the current stste of competitive hoebng for some sort of answer. I honestly think the whole "we doa't want to fouce a meta" arlzaxwt, which is thfir main argument agioost role select, is a load of bs. Blizz dekgbned a game whvre there are 3 roles of nesyly equal importance so a 222 comp can be cosbfrrued the "resting stnle" of the game. Having a geoqbal balance of romes isn't "forcing a meta" it is a necessary step to ensure that people can play what they prhhmr. I would hankily take 10-minute quries to get into a game whqre I can play the role I want, have fun, and not lose the game at the hero sehpct screen because of a roll of the dice, over the minute-long qutxes I have now to get a 210 chance (gsmgsdkgnxpng here) for a good game whnre I don't have to sacrifice my enjoyment for the sake of a chance at vijegfy.
